Winter Skin Care

Seasons Greetings BABBIES!

Finally, I’m back to blogging! I think post-wedding stress disorder has taken it’s toll. I’ve been feeling so crappy these past few weeks. I wanted nothing more than to hide under the covers and come out only for food and the occasional junk TV. The holiday season didn’t even succeed in lifting my spirits, as Hurricane Stephanie blew her unexplained anger and frustrations out at the world (read: DH).

But, I think I’m better now — maybe it’s because my tension headaches have gone away … or it could be that all of my bad moods escaped during the all day hurling fest I had last week Friday (I know, sexy). Either way, I’m starting to feel like my old self and am looking forward to getting back on track!

I hope everyone has been enjoying THEIR holidays! I cannot believe Turkey Day is a full two weeks behind us. This means that the official fall season will soon be coming to an end, making room for the harsh and brutal winters some of us unfortunately have to endure.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but winter usually equals ULTRA DRY SKIN for me! It’s taken yours truly a lot of time and research to figure out what the best skin care regimen is. And while everyone’s skin type is different, I find that it helps to take suggestions and ideas and just tweak them to fit your personal lifestyle.

BANLER, a fabulous beauty blog resource (one of my favorites), has some awesome tips for keeping your skin protected from Old Man Winter’s brutal frosty blows:

o Skip the long, hot showers. This tends to dry skin out. Instead, opt for short showers with warm water.

o Use a gentle, moisturizing wash in the shower. Try L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil or L’Occitane Grape Shower Oil for soft and lightly fragranced skin.

o After your shower, apply a body moisturizer onto skin within 2-3 minutes to help keep water from evaporating.

o Don’t neglect your feet. Add moisture to your feet with L’Occitane Lavender Relaxing Foot Cream, L’Occitane Shea Butter Foot Cream, or June Jacobs Spa Collection Peppermint Foot Mist.

o Hands need help too. Try hand creams and lotions from Natura Bisse, L’Occitane, Essie and Atopalm to help moisturize and protect your skin.

My favorite skin care regimen consists of an old fashion bottle of baby oil – more specifically Johnson & Johnson Lavender Baby Oil (the liquidy kind – NOT the gel). I keep a bottle of this in my shower, right next to my soaps, shampoos/conditioners, body washes and scrubs. At the end of every shower, right before I get out, I slather the baby oil on my skin while it’s still wet. Then I pat myself dry and reapply oil – but this time it’s Vaseline Cocoa Butter Vitalizing Gel Body Oil, mixed with a small dollop of Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula. The end result is smooth skin that locks in moisture for HOURS! I swear … If I’m lyin’, I’m flyin’.

Body scrubs are also great for providing bright, smooth, baby-like skin in the winter (and summer) months! Salt scrubs are great for all over body conditioning — but not to be used on your face. I personally LOVE to use the Sugar Glow Exfoliating Body Wash from TONE, but find myself  experimenting with homemade recipes as well. Yvonne of Flawless Beauty featured a great recipe for a body scrub that helps eliminate dry skin and revitalize the body:

Mix ½ cup of coarse sea salt with ¼  cup of pure rosemary oil (you can adjust to your liking). Apply in the shower or bath with hands, wash cloth or a body scrub tool such as Boots Feel the Difference Detox Body Brush ($6.99, Target).

Make sure you focus on that pretty face and lips as well! Having a dull day? I swear by Origin products, but their Never a Dull Moment skin-brightening face polisher is magic in a jar — it smells yummy too! My skin literally glows every time I use it. As for lips, I highly recommend A Kiss of Moisture from Nivea. This is a new favorite of mine. It definitely has not trumped my number one lip care product, aptly named Lip Balm #1, from Kiehls. But it’s a fabulous, budget friendly alternative.

A fabulous skin care line that’s affordable and gets the job done is Yes to Carrots, sold exclusively at Walgreens everywhere. Their Through the Dry Spell Deliciously Rich Body Butter is a lavish, super thick body butter that will help get you through the winter months. It’s light and creamy and the scent is subtle yet sweet. Your skin will literally drink it up and radiate in response.

I’m definitely not an expert, but I do do my own personal tests and research lots of products. The key thing to keep in mind is that the best offense is always a good defense. Hopefully with the help of this entry, this winter you will be armed and fabulous!

Ciao Bellas!
